Black Bean Brownies

Okay…I know what you are thinking. Black beans have NO PLACE in the world of decadent and sinful desserts. But I promise you, these black bean brownies taste so much like regular brownies that my friends and family could barely tell the difference. If anything, they are MORE chocolaty and MORE fudgy than regular boxed brownie mix! Ohh, and the best part? They are healthy brownies, so you can eat the ENTIRE batch with NO GUILT!

What Does This Black Bean Dessert Recipe Taste like?

To say that they taste similar to brownie batch mix is and understatement. I was quite literally eating the brownie batter off of my mixing spoon (before I added the eggs) and could not tell the difference, other than a slightly thicker texture.

They are very chocolaty, fudgy, and moist, and hold their shape well. I actually really enjoy them chilled in the fridge! For some reason, I feel like this makes them EXTRA indulgent and fudgy!

These flourless brownies cook into a slightly cakey texture. Just make sure you don’t over cook them, because who likes burnt brownies?!

Honestly, most people will not be able to tell the difference.

Are Black Bean Brownies Healthy?

Black bean brownies offer a healthier alternative to traditional brownies due to their nutrient-rich whole ingredients. By incorporating black beans, which are higher in fiber, protein, and antioxidants, these brownies provide a satisfying treat while promoting digestive health and potentially reducing the risk of chronic diseases.

Substituting black beans for flour in the recipe lowers the glycemic index of the brownies, helping to provide sustained energy. With less refined sugar and fat compared to conventional brownies, black bean brownies offer a guilt-free way to indulge in a chocolaty dessert without compromising on taste or nutrition.

I will say though, they are NOT low sugar. Honey contains sugar, but it is from a whole ingredient that is minimally processed and comes straight from Mother Nature. Compared to tablespoons of regular granulated sugar, I will take honey sugar all day!

How To Make Black Bean Brownies:

So this canned bean recipe is actually SUPER easy to make you guys! Use a blender or food processor to make the black bean brownie batter, both work well.

Make sure to scroll down to the recipe card for the full list of ingredients and instructions!

  1. In a food processor or blender, process the 2 cans of rinsed black beans, baking powder, honey, coconut oil, vanilla extract, cocoa powder, instant coffee (optional), and salt.  Blend until a paste forms.

  2. Once a paste is formed, add the eggs. Process until smooth and fully combined. Add the chocolate chips and mix with a spatula.

  3. Now pour your bean mixture into a parchment paper lined 9″ by 9″ baking sheet, and use a spatula to make sure the top is even and flat. Sprinkle with as many chocolate chips as you would like!

  4. Bake in the oven at 350 degrees F for 30-35 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out without any batter on it. Remove and let cool at least 15 minutes before cutting. You can serve them warm, but I personally enjoy how firm and fudgy they get once refrigerated!

When To Serve Brownies With Black Beans?

This is the best healthy dessert recipe to serve to picky eaters. You know, those friends who would NEVER try a brownie made out of beans! The trick is to NOT tell them they’re made out of black beans until AFTER they are begging you for the recipe!

No, I’m just kidding! But trust me, it is very satisfying to tell everyone that this is a canned bean recipe!

  • They make a wonderful summer dessert recipe, because as I mentioned, you can serve them cold.

  • If you are wondering what to do with leftover black beans, this is a great way to use up canned black beans!

  • This pantry dessert recipe is also great for regular weeknights when you are craving chocolate, but don’t want to feel guilty about eating it (Trust me, I have QUITE a few of these nights).
