What Is Espresso Tonic?

Espresso tonic is a combination of espresso, tonic water and a citrus juice, such as lemon juice, lime juice or orange juice. The quinine in the tonic water adds a refreshing and slightly bitter flavor to the rich, complex flavor of espresso. It’s EXTRA bubbly, and seriously addicting!

What Does Espresso Tonic Recipe Taste Like?

Well, if you like tonic drinks, you will definitely love this recipe! If you don’t typically like the flavor of tonic water, then you probably won’t like this (just being honest!). It has that bitter quinine flavor that pairs beautifully with the rich flavor of espresso.

The spices used in the fresh squeezed orange juice mixture contribute a deep warmness to this coffee drink, despite it being served over ice!

What Ingredients Are Needed To Make An Orange Spiced Espresso Tonic?

  • ESPRESSO: You can prepare your espresso as you normally would. Place it in the refrigerator until cooled before making the drink, as this is an iced espresso recipe!

  • TONIC WATER: Tonic water is necessary for this recipe. Don’t use seltzer or sparkling soda, as it does not contain quinine.

  • ORANGE JUICE: For the best flavor, use fresh squeezed. If you are in a time crunch, boxed OJ will also work. Save a slice of orange to use as a garnish!

  • SPICES: We use a dash of ground clove, a dash of ground ginger and a dash of ground cinnamon in this recipe. Many people already have these spices in their pantries, and they work harmoniously together to give this drink it’s signature ‘spiced’ element.

  • SUGAR: To counteract the bitterness of the tonic water and coffee, we use a little bit of sugar. Granulated is fine, as is honey or agave.

Who Will Love This Coffee Recipe?

Anyone who enjoys coffee, and also enjoys tonic, will absolutely love this espresso tonic recipe. If you don’t like tonic, then you are probably out of luck. But if you’re the type of person who’s go-to drink at the bar is a gin and tonic, than you are going to LOVE this easy morning drink! The quinine in the tonic water compliments the acidity of the coffee perfectly.

Pouring in a splash of orange juice really helps to add a little sweetness and extra pizzazz to this effervescent drink!

When To Serve It:

I first experienced tonic coffee about 3 years ago at a small coffee shop outside of Boston. I was so obsessed with it, I used to make it every day before work! It is a great quick morning beverage because you can just pour it all in your to-go cup, and you’re good!

This is also a fantastic brunch recipe, because you can always add alcohol to it! Orange coffee tonic can also be a wonderful holiday coffee idea! When you offer your family members coffee after Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, they won’t be expecting this festive take on an ice coffee!

I also find that I crave it as a fall coffee recipe. When the air begins to crisp up, but the sun is still strong, adding the warm spices to this iced coffee drink makes for the perfect early fall drink recipe!

What Can I Use Instead Of Espresso?

If you do not have any espresso on hand, cold brew works great (though I personally like espresso better). You may find that you will want to use more cold brew for a ratio of 1:1 cold brew to tonic water.
