This spaghetti seasoning mix will probably take you 5 minutes to put together because you likely have all of the ingredients already in your pantry. You can mix it all together and keep it in an air-tight container to use over and over again.

Let’s be real, everyone’s nona has a secret homemade spaghetti sauce recipe that already includes a very specific amount of salt. We purposefully leave the salt out of this recipe for versatility, so you can still use it if your pasta sauce is pre-salted!

The Healthy Spices For Spaghetti Sauce

There is a good chance that you already have all of these spices. Individually, each spice contributes to the overall depth of the spaghetti spice mixture and offers its own unique health benefits.

I always recommend using organic spices in your cooking for optimal health benefits with minimal risk of additives and pesticides. If you are worried that organic spices are too expensive, try purchasing them at ‘Aldi’s‘ grocery store. I find that their organic spices are some of the least expensive around (not sponsored).

  • DRIED ROSEMARY – Rosemary is a popular evergreen that is native to the Mediterranean and contains a wide variety of nutrients. It is high in manganese which is important for good metabolic health and wound healing. It contains carnosic acid, which is a powerful antioxidant that is being studied for its potential ability to slow the growth of cancer cells.

  • BLACK PEPPER – As one of the most commonly used spices in the world, black pepper is high in antioxidants, like peperine, which helps to lower the risk of chronic illnesses like heart disease and some neurological conditions.

  • DRIED OREGANO – Dried oregano is high in vitamin K, and one teaspoon can fulfill about 8% of your recommended daily intake. It is rich in antioxidants that fight free radicals and it may also help fight the growth of infection-causing bacteria.

  • DRIED PARSLEY – Parsley is also rich in vitamin K, along with vitamin C and vitamin A. The main antioxidants in parsley are flavonoids and carotenoids which may lower your risk of colon cancer, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.

  • ONION POWDER – Onion powder is made from dehydrated onions. One tsp contains about 24 mg of potassium which can help to regulate blood pressure. It also contains compounds that have been associated with reducing inflammation in the body.

  • GARLIC POWDER – Garlic powder can help to lower cholesterol levels by preventing the absorption of cholesterol in the gut. The bioactive compounds in garlic powder may help reduce oxidative stress in the body, which can lower the risk of some cancers.

  • RED PEPPER FLAKES – Red pepper flakes benefit the immune system due to antio components from capsaicin. Capsaicin has been found to be an anti-inflammatory and may help to relieve joint pain.

How to make seasoning for spaghetti sauce

I feel weird even giving this recipe steps because you literally toss all of the spices into a bowl and mix them together!

  • Make sure to scroll down to the recipe card for the full list of ingredients and instructions!

  1. In a mortar or small bowl, combine the dried rosemary, black pepper, dried oregano (you can also use Italian seasoning), dried parsley, onion powder, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes.
  2. Using a pestle, grind the herbs and spices until the rosemary is finely ground, or ground to your liking.
  3. Add 1 tbsp at a time to spaghetti sauce, taste, and add more according to your liking. You will also want to taste your sauce for salt, as this recipe purposefully omits salt. You can use the mixture right away, or store it in an air-tight container for up to 6 months

To really enhance the flavor of the sauce, try adding some minced garlic and fresh sliced basil!

How to store it

The storage for this spaghetti seasoning recipe is pretty straightforward.

  • Store the spices for spaghetti sauce in an airtight container in your spice pantry for up to 6 months. When you are ready to use it, give the container a shake!
