Mediterranean Diet Desserts

The Mediterranean diet is a non-restrictive way of eating. Trust me, people in the Mediterranean love a good cannoli or baklava just as much as the next guy. So if you’re craving something a little ‘naughty’, go for it! Desserts and sweets are definitely consumed on occasion in the Mediterranean.

These recipes are merely a healthier alternative on the days when you don’t want to eat something that is super high in refined sugar or highly processed.

NiceCream

Below I will link how I make banana nicecream with nut butter. I always pair high carbohydrate foods with a healthy fat like nut butter to help prevent blood sugar spikes. I also think the flavor combination is amazing!

If you want to use a different frozen fruit, like strawberries or mangos, start with only a tiny bit of liquid and go up from there. The amount of liquid that you will need will differ depending on the fruit you use.

This recipe takes 2 minutes to make. It's just about as easy as it gets, and it really reminds you of traditional icecream!

Equipment

  • 1 high speed blender

Ingredients

  • 2 large frozen bananas, broken in half
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter (organic if you can!)
  • 1/4 cup milk of choice (unsweetened if possible)

Optional additions

  • 1 tsp chia seeds
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 scoop protein powder
  • 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips (to sprinkle over the top once it's done blending)

Instructions

  • Place the frozen bananas into the blender, trying to place them as close to the bottom of the blades as possible.
  • Add the peanut butter and milk to the blender. Add any other additional ingredients that you may want, like chia seeds, cinnamon or protein powder.
  • Blend on high for at least 60 seconds. Turn the blender off and scrape the sides before blending again so all of the ingredients get blended well. You will know it is done when everything is smooth and there are no chunks of peanut butter or banana left.
  • You can serve it immediately by transferring the nicecream to a bowl and sprinkling it with chocolate chips, or you can scoop it into an air tight freezer container and freeze it for up to 2 months. Just note that if you freeze it, it will need time to thaw because it becomes very hard.

Chocolate Avocado Mousse

I know this sounds crazy, but I promise it is AMAZING!

The key here is to make sure that you use enough melted chocolate and powdered cocoa to mask the flavor of the avocado. If you do not use enough you will taste the avocado and it won’t be very appealing (trust me, I’ve done it).

I recommend topping it with fresh berries! They really complement the chocolate mousse well.

Chocolate Avocado Mousse Recipe

Velvety chocolate mousse is made by blending avocado with melted chocolate and cocoa powder! Make sure your avocados are very ripe for the proper consistency.

Equipment

  • 1 Food processor or blender

Ingredients

  • 2 very ripe avocados, skin and pit removed
  • 1/2 cup melted chocolate (opt for bittersweet organic for antioxidants)
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup milk of choice

Optional Toppings

  • berries
  • chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Melt chocolate in the microwave or a double boiler. If microwaving, place chocolate pieces into a microwave safe bowl and add about 1 tsp of milk or butter. Microwave in 30 second increments until melted, stirring in between to prevent burning.
  • Place the ripe avocado into the bottom of a food processor or blender. Add the melted chocolate, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, salt, and milk. Blend on high for at least 60 seconds. Scrape the sides of the bowl and blend again until everything is even and there are no chunks of avocado left.
  • Scoop the mousse into a bowl and cover it with a lid or plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least two hours for the mousse to set. When you are ready to eat it, divide the mousse into bowls and sprinkle with toppings of your choice!
  • *NOTE: If you refrigerate it overnight there may be some liquid that forms at the top. This is normal, and you can just dump the liquid it into the sink or mix it back into the mousse. I wouldnt let it sit for more than 24 hours.

Baked Oat Crumble

I love this recipe. I always have all of the ingredients in my pantry, and it really satisfies my craving for something sweet.

I recommend keeping some larger chunks for snacking! I usually eat those on their own and sprinkle the rest over yogurt or nicecream.

You probably already have all of these ingredients in your pantry, and this recipe can be enjoyed on it's own, or sprinkled over another dish like yogurt or nicecream !
